How to choose the right therapist

Looking for a therapist can feel overwhelming, and it is hard to know where to start. In this video, Helen Tait, our Client Services Lead for psychological therapies, explains what makes a good match, what to look for in those first few sessions, and how we help you find the right person.

Therapy works best when the fit is right.

Where to start

The world of therapy can feel overwhelming when you first start looking for support. It is hard to know where to go, and easy to put off.

In my work as a therapist, I have seen first hand that the fit between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in how well therapy works. You need to feel safe, heard and understood. So how do you find that person?

Start with your why

The first step is understanding what you need.

You might be seeking help for anxiety or low mood. It might be relationship challenges, or support with parenting. You may be looking for neurodivergent informed therapy for your child. Whatever it is, knowing your goal helps us narrow down the right professional for you.

You do not have to choose alone

This is where Oakdale is different. You are not left to work through a directory on your own.

We have a dedicated case management team who know our practitioners well. They understand each therapist's specialist interests, their qualifications and their individual style, and all of that matters in finding you the right match.

We do not simply allocate you to the next person on the list. We match you deliberately, looking at your clinical needs, your availability and your budget, so that the person you meet is the right person for you.

Then check the rapport

By rapport, we mean the relationship between you and your therapist. Even with a perfect match on paper, therapy is human.

Treat those first sessions as a chance to get a sense of that relationship. It helps to ask yourself a few honest questions:

  • Do I feel comfortable with this therapist?
  • Do I feel understood?
  • Can I imagine building trust here over time?
  • Is this therapist's style working for me?

That last part can take a little while, and that is completely normal. We have done the matching work beforehand, so you can focus entirely on the connection.

Taking the first step

We know that reaching out is often the hardest part. You do not have to wait for things to feel bad enough before you ask for help.

We have made the process simple. You can make a self referral right now through our website. Fill in the short form and the team will be in touch to start the matching process.

We look forward to helping you find the right fit, and supporting you from there.
