A bit about intellectual disabilities.
An intellectual disability (ID) is a lifelong condition that affects the way a person learns, thinks, and processes information. It can influence areas such as problem-solving, understanding new concepts, memory, and decision-making, which in turn can make everyday tasks, like learning new skills, communicating effectively, or living independently, more challenging.
Intellectual disabilities usually become apparent during childhood or adolescence, often before the age of 18. In some cases, they can also develop later in life following brain injury or illness.
With the right support, strategies, and interventions, people with intellectual disabilities can build on their strengths, develop important life skills, and lead fulfilling, meaningful lives
What is a cognitive assessment?
A cognitive assessment is a structured evaluation of key thinking skills such as memory, reasoning, problem-solving, processing speed, and working memory. It can help determine whether someone is performing at an expected level for their age, is ahead of expectations, or may have an intellectual disability.
Understanding these abilities is crucial for supporting educational planning, workplace adjustments, and overall wellbeing.

Cognitive assessment FAQs.
Commonly asked questions.
Children struggling at school or showing an uneven learning profile, and adults facing challenges at work, changes in thinking skills, or wanting to understand their cognitive strengths, as well as anyone exploring possible neurodevelopmental differences.
Not on its own. It can help identify whether intellectual ability falls within the range associated with intellectual disability, but a formal diagnosis also requires evidence of adaptive behaviour challenges, which is why we include adaptive behaviour assessment (such as the ABAS-3) as standard. It can't directly diagnose ADHD or autism, though it may highlight patterns suggesting further assessment is worthwhile.
The assessment appointment itself typically lasts 1-3 hours depending on age and attention levels. From referral to final report, the overall process usually takes 3–4 weeks
Yes. The detailed profile of cognitive strengths and needs can provide important supporting evidence for EHCP applications, workplace reasonable adjustments, and other support frameworks.
