If you are considering therapy for the first time, it is completely natural to feel a mix of curiosity and nerves. In this video, Helen Tait, Client Services Lead and Psychotherapist walks you through what to expect, from the moment you arrive at our door to the way you and your therapist work together.
We believe transparency is the first step towards a good working relationship, so here is what the experience actually looks like.
Our reception team will greet you and ask you to sign in. That is a standard health and safety requirement, so we know exactly who is in the building. There is a comfortable waiting area and full facilities on site.
If you are bringing a child or young person, we ask that you stay in the building during their session. It keeps the environment safe, and means you are right there for them the moment their appointment ends.
We are an inclusive space. If you rely on a certified assistance or therapeutic animal, let us know in advance and we will make arrangements to welcome them alongside you.
Online therapy is a flexible option if your life is busy, and all of our therapists are skilled at delivering care remotely.
To get the most from it, find a quiet, private room where you will not be overheard, and check that your device is secure and your connection is stable. Just as in our centres, your session needs a strictly confidential space.
Your first appointment is a conversation, not an assessment. There is no pressure to have all the answers.
Your therapist will take time to understand what brings you to therapy now, the challenges you are facing, and any goals you have.
You may notice them taking notes. That is normal, and part of how we track your progress and keep our care evidence based. Those records are strictly confidential, stored on a secure clinical system in full compliance with data protection law.
Different approaches feel different in practice. Some are structured and goal focused, others more reflective and exploratory, and many sit somewhere in between.
Whether we use CBT, EMDR, systemic family work or another approach, what matters is that it fits you. Sessions might involve talking through thoughts and experiences, noticing patterns, or learning and practising strategies you can use outside the room.
It is collaborative throughout. Please do tell your therapist what is working and what is not, because that feedback genuinely shapes the work.
How therapy ends matters as much as how it begins.
When the time feels right, whether you have reached what you came for or you feel ready to pause, we will plan a thoughtful ending together, so you leave feeling grounded and ready for what comes next.
Therapy is not about being fixed or judged. It is a space to reflect, gain clarity and make sense of your experiences. Some sessions feel emotional, others practical, and that is all part of it.
Above all, it is your time. If you are ready to take the first step, our referral form takes only a few minutes, and we will work to match you with the right therapist.
Our clinical team can talk through your options and help you work out the right next step, whether that is for you or for someone you care about.
